Who?
Daniel
Where?
Berlin, Germany
What?
"Coming here was super brave of you. I admire your guts."
How did he react?
He looked at me, nodded and said, "Thank you."
How did I feel?
He did it before, ten years ago. Flew to Amsterdam, tried to make a living there. It did not work. He says, "I was too young."
So he went back to Israel, where he was born and raised. Let some time pass. Now he is giving himself a second chance: Four months ago he came to Berlin with no plan, no cash and no German words other than "Putz deine Zähne" ("Brush you teeth"), "Hör auf zu schreien" ("Stop screaming"), "Geh in's Bett." ("Go to bed"). His dad is German, he left when Daniel was six. These words are all he remembers. I don't know much about Daniel, I met him in a Yoga class. All I can tell is he has a beautiful Yoga practice with slow movements- and that he is super brave. Because the only thing he did have when first arriving to the city was a feeling: "Something inside of me knew all along: I had to fly abroad and figure something out for myself", he told me. With a sparkle in his eye he added, "And guess what, from next month I will have my own apartment!"
Knowing that he failed once and still trusted his gut, packed his things and left impressed me with awe. I have no doubt he is going to figure everything out for himself eventually; With that grit of his, plus the patience he has with himself- I can't think of anything he could not face. Hats off, Daniel- and all the best for your journey!
Anything else?
I left my phone at home- which is why I gave my best at portraying Daniel in painted form...
