HOW did they react?
They were taken by surprise. For a second they didn't know what to say. Then she smiled and said "Thanks!". Soon after that he did, too.
HOW did I feel?
Happy.
This afternoon I went for a walk, looking for someone to compliment in Bonn. The sun was burning, ice cream was the accessory of the day. I'd just found out that DIE ZEIT had mentioned my blog online. It felt like a dream. Beaming with joy, I kept checking my right and left for a candidate. I doubted I was going to notice subtle beauty. I thought I was too high for being that sensitive. Till Ursula and Werner caught my eye. They moved towards me, hand in hand. He was walking with a stick. I estimated their age at 70 or older. Their steps were slow- yet weightless... And both their smiles said: "I am in love."
It was clear they were the right choice. I went up to them and complimented them. (How did I feel? Great. Honestly I guess I would have anywhere, no matter what though.)
Taking a closer look the first thing I noticed was the softness of Ursula's eyes. They were deep and surrounded by wrinkles. She gazed at me in that wise way. Still I could see the happy girl she was, standing next to Werner. She wore a blue-pinkish hair pin behind her ear. I remembered I'd possessed a similar one back in elementary school.
Werner was very interested and talkative: After he'd thanked me for what I'd said to them he explained that compliments were a great thing. Then he told me about how they met: They fell in love in the retirement home they both live in. "It used to be a monastery", Werner said. "Guess what, nowadays those nuns have some serious recruitment problems! Most of the young ones actually come from Africa. They are really pretty, those girls...-" "Ah, ah, ah!", Ursula stepped in with a grin, "Good thing I didn't hear that!"
Werner looked confused. Then he replied: "Honey, darling! These ladies are pretty. You on the other hand are beautiful!"
