WHO?
My boss.
WHERE?
Bonn, Germany
WHAT?
"You have a really nice smile."
HOW did he react?
I stopped him after work as he was standing next to his car, checking his smartphone. When he heard his name he looked up and needed a second.
I complimented him. His face went from preoccupied to irritated and surprised. Then he smiled. I laughed and said "Yeah, it's that smile I am talking about." He laughed, too. I said goodbye and left.
HOW did I feel?
Afterwards: Great!
During: Excited-nervous-insecure. I am leaving my job and while our contact used to be warm it has cooled down over the course of the last months. I wasn't sure how he was going to react. Yet I knew he was the right person for today the minute I saw him leave the building: I realized I had always enjoyed his vivid and open smile. Plus he was the right amount of challenge for me, considering our background.
ANYTHING ELSE (thoughts on the project, changes, observations?)?
First of all I am amazed by all the positive reactions and support I have been getting for this project. This will be a fun year.
I have yet to determine whether I will let the 'receivers' know about the blog or not. Integrating their perspectives into this report would be a gain- no doubt. But maybe the compliment would come across stronger if I didn't mention the blog. This way no one would feel like they were a means to an end- which they are not either way. The end is the compliment itself. This blog serves as a documentation of the process, containing the stories and inspiring myself and others.
I have been thinking about my motivations, too. I am looking forward to figuring them out more clearly over the course of the experiment.
Definitely looking forward to tomorrow!
